Overview of the Post-Secondary Education Sector

The most important link between post-secondary education and the world of work is, undoubtedly, skills.

Perhaps more than any other sector, postsecondary education is being affected by changing demand as the learning needs and preferences of the individual consumer rapidly evolve. Increasingly, individuals need both lifelong learning and accelerated, on-demand learning, largely as a response to the pressures of the broader evolving economic landscape.

As a result of this growing set of unmet needs, lower barriers to entry and commercialization, a new ecosystem of educational players is emerging, largely independent of the traditional educational landscape.

This rich ecosystem of semi-structured, unorthodox learning providers is emerging at the edges of the current postsecondary world, with innovations that challenge the structure and even existence of traditional education institutions. In addition, these challengers are extending the education space beyond grades, degrees, and certificates to provide lifelong learning in a variety of formats and levels of effectiveness.

There are also remarkable differences in the learning and training methods of the large numbers of graduates that are exiting the secondary school system every year. While employees in older age brackets prefer traditional, classroom methods of training, younger individuals seek interactive, technology-based learning experiences.

In addition, the existing workforce and parents of children who will one day be in the workforce fret about what skills will be required in an increasingly automated, networked and data-driven world. Some members of the workforce have already had their incomes or employment disrupted by technology.

There are many jobs in high demand today that didn’t exist 10 years ago and it’s difficult to predict what the high-demand jobs will be 10 or 20 years from now. Though certain things will remain the same, how one applies knowledge will certainly change.

The upshot is that each post-secondary institution must respond to the ever-changing realities of the job market by striving to provide their students with market-ready skills. The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC)

A government Body with the mandate 

  • Set and maintain examinations standards
  • Conduct public academic, technical and other national examinations within Kenya at basic and tertiary levels
  • Award certificates or diplomas to candidates in such examinations. (Such certificates or diplomas, shall not be withheld from the candidate by any person or institution)
  • Confirm authenticity of certificates or diplomas issued by the Council upon request by the government, public institutions, learning institutions, employers and other interested parties
  • Undertake research on educational assessment
